Scientists Mapped the Genome of an Animal Nobody Has Seen Alive Since 2013

The saola, the "Asian unicorn," has not been confirmed alive in more than a decade. In 2025 researchers sequenced its genome anyway, and found a slim, strange reason for hope.

A reference genome for a ghost

The saola is the closest thing modern zoology has to a myth. A forest-dwelling bovine with two long, near-parallel horns, it was unknown to science until 1992 and has almost never been seen since. It lives, if it still lives, only in the Annamite Mountains along the border of Vietnam and Laos. It has never been held successfully in captivity. The last confirmed record is a camera-trap photograph from 2013. The IUCN considers that fewer than 100 individuals, and quite possibly far fewer, remain.

In May 2025, an international team led from the University of Copenhagen published the first saola genome in the journal Cell, assembling a reference and the sequences of 26 individuals from scraps: skin, hair, bone, tissue held in villages and collections. It is a genome for an animal that no scientist can currently prove is alive.

What the DNA said

Two findings stand out. First, the saola is not one uniform remnant but two genetically distinct populations, which parted somewhere between roughly 5,000 and 20,000 years ago. Second, and this is the part that matters for its future, both populations have declined and lost diversity, but the variation each has kept is complementary. Neither alone holds enough genetic health to be a safe foundation. Together, they might.

That is a real, if narrow, path. If a captive-breeding program could ever be established, mixing animals from both lineages could produce a founding population with more of the genetic toolkit a species needs to survive than either population could supply on its own. The genome turns a vague hope, "maybe we could breed them", into a specific plan for how.

It is a rescue blueprint for an animal we have not yet found.

The tool that might find one

The second use is more immediate. A reference genome is what makes sensitive detection possible. Environmental DNA, traces an animal sheds into water and soil, or that turns up in the guts of leeches that fed on it, can be matched against a known genome to say this species passed here. Before 2025 there was no saola reference to match against. Now there is. The same data that describes the saola's ancestry also sharpens every future search for a living one.

The caveat that swallows everything

None of it works if there are none left. Every sentence above rests on an assumption that cannot currently be verified: that somewhere in the Annamites, a handful of saola persist, uncounted and unphotographed. The genome does not change that number; it only prepares us to act if the number is above zero. The researchers are candid that the window is closing, and that a genomic rescue plan is worthless without animals to enact it on.

This is what conservation looks like at the outer edge, not saving an animal, but building the tools to save it in case it is still there, and racing the possibility that it is already too late. The saola may be the first species we sequence not to study it, but to try to find it before it is only a genome.
