A Meteor, an Ice-Age Girl, and the Nine Lords of the Underworld: One Cenote, Read Three Ways
At Cenote Jardín del Edén near Puerto Aventuras, the diver known as Captain Quickie walks through the deep-time, Maya, and modern lives of a single sinkhole. We ran everything he said past the science, most of it holds, and the parts that don't are worth the correction.
At Cenote Jardín del Edén, an open, jungle-ringed sinkhole in the Ponderosa system, just south of Puerto Aventuras in Quintana Roo, Mexico, Cuitláhuac Romano, the charter captain and freediver known to everyone as Captain Quickie, sat at the water's edge and offered a way of seeing the place he stewards. A cenote, he said, can be read on three timelines:
"There's the pre-historical side, there's the pre-Hispanic side, and the modern day side."
We took him at his word and checked all three against the science. It is an unusually good frame, and he is right far more often than the average dive guide. Where his account runs ahead of the evidence, the corrections are small and worth making, because a cenote is one of those rare places where the folk story and the peer-reviewed one are both extraordinary, and neither needs embellishing.

Deep time: the meteor is real, but so is the correction
His origin story starts with the impact that ended the dinosaurs.
"According to the theory of evolution, the whole peninsula of Yucatán used to be an underwater reef. And when allegedly a meteor hit the planet that sent the dinosaurs into extinction, it hit pretty close to this area."
That impact is the Chicxulub event, roughly 66 million years ago, and its buried crater really does sit under the northern Yucatán. Its rim is traced on the surface by the famous Ring of Cenotes, a ~165-km arc of sinkholes on the UNESCO tentative list, a place where the deep scar of the impact still organises where water collects.
Two honest refinements, neither of which spoils the story:
The peninsula is not the crater. The Ring of Cenotes marks the crater rim in the northwest, near Mérida. Jardín del Edén sits on the Caribbean coast, on a much larger limestone platform. Its caves are not the meteor's blast, they are karst: limestone slowly dissolved by mildly acidic groundwater over millions of years, which is why the whole peninsula drains underground and has almost no surface rivers.
Coral has an exoskeleton, not an endoskeleton. He describes the limestone as "the endoskeleton of the coral." The bones of the Yucatán platform are indeed the carbonate remains of marine life, but coral builds its hard parts on the outside. A small biology slip inside a fundamentally correct idea: this rock was once alive, and it was made in the sea.
What he gets exactly right is the texture of the result:
"The whole Yucatán Peninsula has a very elaborate underground cave system, which essentially, put into layman's terms, [is] Swiss cheese."
That is a fair description of one of the most extensive flooded cave networks on Earth. The nearby Sistema Sac Actun is the longest surveyed underwater cave system in the world, on the order of 376 km of mapped passages with hundreds of cenote entrances.
Pre-history: the girl in the black hole
Here his account touches something genuinely world-class, and the verified version is even sharper than the one he tells.
"About 15 to 17 years ago, we started finding stockpiles of carbon remnants of bonfires, and the big red flag was finding a five-foot mammoth pelvis bone… When it was carbon dated, it came back 13 to 15,000 years. So apparently pre-historic life forms were taking refuge in the cave system during the ice age."
The bones are real, the ice age is the right era, and the mechanism is exactly what he says. During the last glacial maximum, sea level stood roughly 100+ metres lower than today; the caves were dry and open, and people and animals walked into them for water and shelter. When the ice melted, the sea rose and flooded the passages, sealing what was inside.
The most famous discovery of this kind is not a mammoth but a teenager. In a deep chamber called Hoyo Negro, "black hole", within the Sac Actun system, divers found the near-complete skeleton of a girl who fell to her death some 12,000 to 13,000 years ago. Nicknamed Naia, she is among the oldest and most complete human skeletons ever found in the Americas, and she lay co-mingled with Ice Age megafauna: ground sloths, a gomphothere (an elephant relative), cougars, tapirs, and cave bears. The site is studied by Mexico's INAH and documented by the University of California, San Diego.
So the correction is only in the credits. The science is not a rumour whispered between dive guides, it is one of the defining Paleoamerican discoveries of the century, and it happened in his backyard.
Pre-Hispanic: the mouth of Xibalba
On the Maya, he is on firm ground.
"From a pre-Hispanic perspective, the cenotes were considered by the Mayans to be sacred. They were the entrance into Xibalba, which is the infra-world."
In Maya cosmology, caves and cenotes were openings to Xibalba, the underworld described in the K'iche' Maya Popol Vuh and ruled by its lords of death. This was not abstract: at Chichén Itzá, the great Sacred Cenote received offerings and human remains. Cenotes were simultaneously the sacred threshold and the practical lifeline, because in a land with no rivers, the cenote is the well.
"It was also a very important, and continues to be a very important, watershed, because essentially what feeds the cenotes is rainwater filtered by limestone."
Correct, and load-bearing for everything that follows. The peninsula's freshwater is a single connected karst aquifer, recharged by rain that sinks straight through porous stone. There is almost no surface buffer. What lands on the ground reaches the water people drink with very little in between, a fact that turns the last part of the interview from scenery into stakes.
The modern cenote: a young forest on bare rock
Captain Quickie has run this cenote for years, and his ecology is close-observed. A wild moment interrupts the interview when a grebe, a diving waterbird he insists is an out-of-place "Canadian citizen", surfaces in the pool, imitating the resident anhinga's fishing dives without ever catching anything. He laughs and calls it "Darwin's theory of adaptation."
The bird list around him is a real Yucatán assemblage: the endemic Yucatán jay, migratory anhingas, and a pair of bare-throated tiger herons that he counts as his proudest result. They moved in after two years of protection, nesting in a mangrove in recovery, which he correctly frames as the ecosystem's filter.
Then the mammals, verified by a camera trap after a maintenance worker rounded a corner into one:
"One of our maintenance guys bumped into a jaguar, which is… endangered worldwide and protected. We've also got ocelots, we've got tapirs, we've got agoutis, ocellated turkeys… black hawks. We've really got a very rich and diverse wildlife in the area, in spite of being a young rainforest, because, as you look around, there is no topsoil."
That last observation is the sharpest piece of field geology in the whole conversation. There is no soil because the ground is raw limestone; the forest survives on humidity trapped in porous rock and on the water table just beneath it. He describes tree roots perforating the limestone to reach that water, widening cracks until, over thousands of years, the ceiling collapses and a new cenote opens to the sky. That is, in plain language, an accurate account of how a covered cave becomes an open sinkhole. The one he is sitting beside, he notes, was probably fully underground two or three thousand years ago.
The threats he names, and one the newest science reframes
This is where a dive guide's philosophy meets measurable data, and he mostly wins.
Sunscreen. He worries that "body lotions and sunblocks" are harming the system. The data back him: researchers estimate hundreds of tonnes of sunscreen per year enter the Riviera Maya's aquifer and coastal water, carrying compounds such as oxybenzone that are toxic to corals and marine life. Because the karst offers no filtration, what rinses off a swimmer can reach the drinking-water aquifer fast. Protected areas here now require biodegradable sunscreen, and his instinct, cover up, rinse off, keep chemicals out of the water, is exactly right.
Sargassum. He points to the mats of brown seaweed choking the Caribbean coast, and offers cenotes as the "saving grace" for visitors when the beaches foul. On the scale of the problem he is not exaggerating: the Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt has bloomed almost every year since 2011, and 2025 set a record, satellite estimates around 38 million tonnes across the Atlantic and Caribbean, with hundreds of thousands of tonnes landing on Quintana Roo's shores.
But here we owe readers the correction we owe everyone, including ourselves. He attributes the blooms squarely to "human behaviour and impact." The most recent research complicates that. Work published in 2025 finds the dominant nutrient source is natural ocean upwelling, nitrogen and phosphorus mixed up from depth, with a shift in atmospheric circulation around 2009–2010 as the tipping point. River-borne fertiliser runoff plays a role, but models attribute the majority of the growth to ocean processes, not directly to what happens on land.
That does not let anyone off the hook, warming and nutrient loading are still human fingerprints on the ocean, but "it's because of our behaviour" is a simpler story than the evidence currently supports. We flag it precisely because he is otherwise such a reliable narrator, and because the point of this Report is that the correction is part of the respect.
The steward's case
He ends not with despair but with a distinction that has stayed with us.
"A lot of times people say we need to save the planet, and I'm a firm believer the planet's been around probably a billion years and will continue to be around for a billion years. Being a father, I wish that we could make a better effort to save our home, because it's ridiculous that we are the only animal that doesn't find an equilibrium between taking advantage and preserving the environment that we live in."
And a warning, in the plainest terms a businessman who loves a place can offer:
"Let's not bring [those] behaviours to the cenotes, because essentially we will be killing the goose that lays the golden eggs."
He signs off the way he asks to be found: "Everybody knows me as Captain Quickie. You can look me up at #captainquickie." Off camera he runs Local Quickies, a private yacht-and-cenote charter service based in Puerto Aventuras, and lists himself, simply, as an environmentalist.
Why this is on AEDO1
This is the first piece in the Conservation Report told through a person rather than a dataset, and it is a test of the same promise. We did not simply publish a charismatic local's account because it was charismatic. We checked it, the Chicxulub impact, the flooded Ice Age caves and Naia, the Xibalba cosmology, the aquifer with no rivers, the sunscreen load, the record sargassum, and we told you where it holds and the three places it drifts.
It holds almost everywhere. That is the point worth leaving on: the people who actually stand in these places, day after day, tend to know them well. Our job is not to correct them for sport. It is to make sure that when a steward and the science agree, and here they overwhelmingly do, you can trust that the agreement is real.
