The Textiles Were Well Preserved in the 1980s. By the 2010s They Were Almost Gone.
Archaeology's default doctrine is to leave things in the ground, because the ground preserves them. At a 17th-century whalers' graveyard on Svalbard, researchers measured what happens when the ground stops keeping its side of the bargain.
On 20 May 2026, PLOS One published a study of Likneset — a 17th-century whalers' burial ground on Svalbard, sometimes called "Corpse Point." It is the largest known whaling burial site on the archipelago, with more than 225 graves recorded since the 1980s.
The finding that matters is a comparison, not a model.
Researchers set the 1980s excavations beside the 2010s excavations of the same site. Erosional damage to graves along the coastline had increased significantly. And the detail that carries the whole paper:
Textiles that were well preserved in the 1980s were almost completely degraded by the 2010s.
Same site. Same graves. Roughly thirty years apart. Fabric that had survived three hundred and fifty years in the ground did not survive the last thirty.
Why this is evidence and not a forecast
Most climate impact on heritage is projected. This is measured, and it is measured against the strongest possible control: the site itself, earlier.
The textiles are not a proxy. They are the object. Nobody had to model a counterfactual — the counterfactual is in the 1980s excavation report, described and photographed by archaeologists who had no idea they were recording a baseline.
That is the rare thing here. As we have written about carbon credits and Indigenous land protection, a claim about "what would have happened otherwise" is a model and should be read as one. This is not that. This is a before and an after.
The doctrine that quietly depended on ice
Archaeology's default is in situ preservation: leave material in the ground. The reasoning is sound and conservative — excavation is destructive, methods improve, future archaeologists will read more from the same soil than we can. So you dig only what you must, and you leave the rest for people with better tools.
In the Arctic, that doctrine rested on something nobody had to state, because it had always been true: the ground is frozen and will stay frozen.
Permafrost is not merely a place where artefacts happen to be. It is the preservation mechanism. It excludes oxygen, holds temperature, and suppresses the microbes that eat organic material. It is why the Arctic holds textiles, wood, leather, hair and skin that would have vanished centuries ago almost anywhere else.
Permafrost was never a storage location. It was a free service. And the study finds that heritage strategies based on in situ preservation and "managed decay" are increasingly strained under warming permafrost.
"Managed decay" is an honest term for a policy of accepting slow loss at a known rate. It stops being manageable when the rate changes.
The archive is the thing that is melting.
The scale
The Arctic warms at roughly twice the global average. More than 180,000 archaeological sites are registered there.
Not damaged — registered. That is the count of what is known to exist, in the region where the preservation mechanism is failing fastest. Globally, thawing permafrost, coastal erosion, flooding and drought threaten potentially millions of sites.
Likneset has already lost parts of its cemetery to the sea. Not projected to. Has.
And these are, by definition, the sites we know about. The unregistered ones are degrading at the same rate, unphotographed, and will pass from unknown to gone without ever being counted.
Whalers
It is worth stating what Likneset actually is.
These are the graves of men who came to the Arctic to kill whales — the industry that, at its height, worked the northern seas hard enough to leave populations from which some have never recovered. As we reported in the 2026 right whale calving season, the North Atlantic right whale sits at roughly 384 animals and about 70 breeding females, and it got there because it was the "right" whale to hunt: slow, coastal, and it floated when killed.
The men buried at Corpse Point are the reason. They died doing it — the study examines occupational health alongside the heritage loss — and were buried in frozen ground at the top of the world.
Now the record of the industry that emptied the Arctic is being destroyed by the industry that replaced it. The whalers' graves are being taken by warming driven by the fossil economy that made whale oil obsolete.
We are not going to draw a moral from that. It is simply what is happening, and it is worth writing down.
What the researchers ask for
The study's recommendations are unglamorous and specific:
- Systematic monitoring — you cannot triage what you are not measuring.
- Targeted documentation — excavate and record what will not survive, rather than defending a doctrine of leaving it that assumes a stability which no longer exists.
- Integration of archaeological data into climate adaptation planning — heritage is currently almost absent from adaptation frameworks.
The second is a real reversal. It means abandoning in situ preservation for sites that are going regardless, and accepting that a partial record made now with imperfect methods is better than a perfect record made later of nothing.
That is a genuinely hard call, and reasonable archaeologists disagree about where the line sits. But the line is moving whether or not the discipline moves it.

The same warming in the glacier record — where 2025's loss was "only" sixth-worst on record because six of the seven worst are the last seven years — is the warming taking Likneset. One shows up as sea level. The other shows up as textiles that were there in the 1980s and are not there now.
There is no future excavation of a site that has already washed into the sea. Archaeology has always been able to say later. On this coastline, it can't.
